Reset, Refresh, Software Update Available

This is the first post for the newly branded LightFaded website. Thanks for being here. My aspirations are to post at least once a week. I plan to write about photography, art, music, films, screenwriting and minimalism. I may or may not occasionally write about a Swiss watch or two.  I hope you will follow along.

This post is about a hard reset. It’s about that feeling many of us in the creative world experience - the sinking feeling of burnout - of disillusionment with the process of creating. And we turn inward.

It’s not a good feeling. I think it is often what turns many people away from creating new work.

2020 has been a tough one. Most photographic work halted in the face of the pandemic. I can remember April 2020: rampant uncertainty, raw winds, chilly air. The thought of loading film in my camera seemed so trivial compared to what was happening in the world.

Restart. Refresh. Your computer will be with you in a moment.

I think it is time to move forward and push myself in a new direction as a photographer. I spend a lot of time looking at photography; Instagram can still be a great place to discover great photography.

I want to move in a direction that is more focused on portraiture in a documentary style. I want to find interesting people who do interesting things and create photo essays. I am fascinated by people. Over the past few months we have been inundated by bad, but we shouldn’t diminish the amount of good that was done by people who care. People who put routinely put others first.

I have been experimenting with some digital cameras and they are cool. So different from old-school film. But, it’s all a state of mind. The most important part is the work and that’s where I want to focus all of my creative energy.

With the strangest summer of most of our lives winding down, all I can think about is moving forward. Creating new work and starting the next chapter.  Once again I do hope you will follow along with this new creative endeavor - both the blog and the new work.

I hope to start a dialogue with many of my readers. Please comment or reach out.

I hope you are all well!

Until next week!

Listen: George FitzGerald “All That Must Be” (Electronic, 2018)

Watch: Greyhound, Apple TV, 2020. A short film with Tom Hanks set in the Atlantic Ocean during WWII.

Read:  Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton. Originally published by Alfred A. Knopf, 1990.

Sure, a billion people have seen the movie, but have you read the book? It’s awesome. It’s 90s. And there are dinosaurs. Buy at The Strand in NYC or just check it out at your local library.

Next post: Philips Photography Auction in London. I’ll discuss a few of my favorite works that are for sale and perhaps lament on their bid estimates.
